Experimental Tomography

Available to students on full-time physics degree schemes only.

Project description and methodology

Tomography allows the imaging of a parameter over a region of interest by using a large number of measurements made through the region from its perimeter. Inversion of the measurements using a suitable reconstruction algorithm yields an image of the parameter. The project involves the identification of an experimental tomography system suitable for implementation in the teaching laboratory, a detailed investigation of reconstruction algorithms and viewing geometry, the set up of a test experimental system and writing of reconstruction routines.

A successful project will develop beyond the above in one/some of the following directions:
Implement and compare different reconstruction algorithms.

When considering where to take your project, please bear in mind the time available. It is preferable to do fewer things well than to try many and not get conclusive results on any of them. However, sometimes it is useful to have a couple of strands of investigation in parallel to work on in case delays occur.

This project is only available as a Y3 project.
