Nature of project: data analysis, software

Waves are of great diagnostic value to study the properties of the atmosphere of the Sun.
The EUV imaging spectrometer (EIS) contains numerous emission lines originating from ions existing at a range of temperatures between the chromospehre and the corona.
Data from Hinode/EIS observations will be processed and analysed using Solar Soft. Spectral line profiles will be constructed. Intensity and Doppler shift time series will be extracted from line profiles. Possible structures of interest include coronal loops in active regions above sunspots and in quiet sun regions.
A successful project will develop beyond the above in one/some of the following directions:
The aim of the project is the detection of waves in time series obtained from spectroscopic data. Waves will be looked for both in the velocity and intensity time series.
When considering where to take your project, please bear in mind the time available. It is preferable to do fewer things well than to try many and not get conclusive results on any of them. However, sometimes it is useful to have a couple of strands of investigation in parallel to work on in case delays occur.
Additional scope or challenge if taken as a Year-4 project: The detected waves will be classified and used for diagnostic purposes.

Initial literature for students:
The students will be introduced to the IDL package Solar Soft. The project will help the students to gain firsthand experience of dealing with satellite data.
